Petroleum licences

Petroleum licence Some Fire & Rescue Services are able to process applications for the storage and dispensing of petrol and LNG (liquid methane). Please note that a fee will be charged for the issue of a petroleum licence.

You can request or renew your petroleum licence here.
If you wish to store petroleum spirit or LNG (liquid methane), and/or you sell this to the public, you will require a petroleum licence.

Currently, the following Fire & Rescue Services will be able to process your application:
  • Avon
  • Cornwall
  • County Durham & Darlington
  • Cumbria
  • East Sussex
  • Greater Manchester
  • Hertfordshire
  • Isle of Wight
  • Lincolnshire (Please click on the link if you wish to renew and pay for your licence direct on the Lincolnshire County Council Website, alternatively use the link at the bottom of this page to renew via fire.gov.uk)
  • London
  • Merseyside
  • Norfolk
  • Northamptonshire
  • Northumberland
  • Oxfordshire
  • Somerset
  • South Yorkshire
  • Tyne & Wear
  • West Yorkshire.

Applications in all other areas should be made via the appropriate authority - remember the licence is based upon where the goods will be stored, not where the licence holder resides.

Please note that a fee will be charged for the issue of a petroleum licence. These are subject to change but are currently:

Not exceeding 2500 Litres - £38
Exceeding 2500 litres not exceeding 50000 litres - £53
Exceeding 50000 Litres - £108.
Licence transfer - £8
